Therapeutic Equestrian Arena

The MA Hospital School provides serves children and young adults with multiple disabilities, helping them achieve their maximum independence. The therapeutic equestrian program is an integral part of the educational and therapeutic environment. Our design for the School’s first indoor arena has enabled the program to function year-round.

Therapeutic Equestrian Arena: Siting the Facility

Our work began with a study to locate the arena and program its use. Reservoir Farm comprised a series of livestock buildings and adjacent meadows on the School grounds. By demolishing an abandoned chicken coop and re-arranging parking we were able to create space for the new indoor arena that enhances the bucolic setting.

Therapeutic Equestrian Arena: Riding Arena

The centerpiece of the 17,000 SF facility is an indoor riding arena. Ancillary spaces include an adjacent viewing area for visitors, staff offices, public restrooms, and stables. Pre-fabricated construction was used to control costs.

Therapeutic Equestrian Arena: Mounting Platform

We designed a ramped mounting platform for riders who use wheelchairs, and a separate platform for riding staff. The horse stands between the two platforms while staff members assist the child in mounting and being positioned onto the saddle.

Therapeutic Equestrian Arena: Horse Stables

The facility features six stables with a tackroom and grooming area adjacent to the arena.

Therapeutic Equestrian Arena: Outdoor Paddocks

Our site plan for the facility includes six fenced outdoor pens for the six horses in the program.
